Happy Election Day, American citizen readers! I’ve been tabling at my university all day today, but I made sure to take a little bit of time away to tell y’all about some incredible-sounding books I recently added to my to-be-read pile. As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the magnificent folks over at The Broke and the Bookish.

My Picks for This Week

1. Housebroken by Laurie Notaro (Genre: Humor, Nonfiction) – This is Laurie’s 10th collection of essays, and I’ve loved every single one of them. She is truly a queen among the flood of recent celebrity autobiographies and memoirs, with her lightning-quick wit and a serious knack for side-splitting life stories we can all relate to.

2. A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Rayburn (Genre: Adult Historical Mystery) – I recently read the first Veronica Speedwell book, A Curious Beginning, a hilarious and captivating story that shot up to the top of my favorites list after stumbling upon it completely by accident. I’m honestly amazed there is already a sequel, and you know I’ll be one of the first in line to jump back into this romp of a mystery novel.

3. Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh (Genre: YA Historical Fantasy) – The absolutely mystifying cover was what originally caught my eye, but then I saw it was being written by Renée Ahdieh and I exploded a little, and then I saw it’s a partial Mulan retelling, and I’m feeling a lot like Grandmother Fa right now.

4. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (Genre: Adult Science Fiction) – I’ve heard and seen a ton of glowing reviews for this new sci-fi thriller. Quantum mechanics and alternate realities? Not always my thing, but the last time I read a sci-fi novel because of all the hype (*cough* The Martian) I enjoyed myself much more than I anticipated. Making time for this one for sure.

5. The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer (Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy) – Over the summer, I worked for a nonprofit organization that was practically overrun with volunteers from the local middle school who came to earn “student service hours” required by their school. One of the girls I supervised could not stop talking about this series, and swore up and down that I would love it as much as she did. I haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet, but I plan to read it before I see her again and hopefully I really do enjoy it as much as she says.

6. Grunt by Mary Roach (Genre: Nonfiction, Science & Military) – Back in high school, I had the immense pleasure of reading Stiff along with the rest of my Honors Anatomy class, and have adored almost all of Mary’s books ever since. This one I actually just heard of when I was looking through the nominees for this year’s Goodreads Choice Awards, and will absolutely be picking this up as soon as I can find it!

7. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (Genre: Adult High Fantasy) – Although this has been on my TBR shelf for a while, I had completely forgotten about it until today when I was chatting with an old friend who had just finished the audiobook version. Honestly the genre for this is a little up in the air because it’s a coming of age story that crosses the YA and adult boundaries, yet it looks like something anyone would enjoy, and I believe it’ll be one of my next audiobook reviews if I end up borrowing her copy of it soon.

8. Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changeling #3) by Nalini Singh (Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance) – The cover for this looks absolutely ridiculous. But you know what? I honestly really liked the first book in this series, and was content with the second, so I think I may actually make the effort to continue reading these novels. Some of them seem like complete and total trash, but I know several in the (currently 15 books long) series that have raving reviews, so I have high hopes for what’s next for these characters.

9.  Rising Action (The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 4) by Gillen McKelvie & Wilson Cowles (Genre: Graphic Novel) – This whole series got really dark, really fast. The last one was honestly not as compelling for me (lots of guest artists, little plot), but when I heard about the recent release of this novel, I decided I’d still like to see where the story goes. And that cover is horrifyingly brilliant.

10. Replica by Lauren Oliver (Genre: YA Science Fiction) – I thought about reading this a while ago, but because I wasn’t the most keen on Delirium, I decided to pass. Since it’s come out, there have been a lot more positive reviews (including reviews from people who also didn’t like Delirium), so I am considering giving it a go. So many books, so little time!

  3. Great picks for this week Diana, I have Flame in the Mist on my to-read list as well. I loved Renee Ahdieh’s first duology, The Wrath and the Dawn, so I have really high hopes for this book. Plus the cover is gorgeous which is really just an added plus isn’t it?
    I’ve seen a lot of Dark Matter around recently, and I do love sci-fi books so I may have to check that one out as well, especially if it has as many glowing reviews so you say it has.
    Also I hope you enjoy Replica too. I finished it last week and thought it was a great story. 🙂

    1. Oh, I adored The Wrath and the Dawn – at this point, I’d probably read anything Renee writes. Her short stories filled the void between the first and second in the duology for me like no other.
      I’d love to hear your thoughts on Dark Matter if you’re able to pick it up soon. & I’m really excited to start Replica, I’m glad to hear it was a good read! 🙂

      1. Same here actually, I think by this point I’m actually a little more excited for Flame in the Mist than I was for The Rose and the Dagger, and I didn’t think that was possible. Even her short stories were addictive.
        I hope so, maybe before the end of this year if I get through the others book on my to-read list.
        Definitely a good read, I do hope you enjoy it! 😀

  4. Great picks! Definitely adding Flame In the Mist to my wishlist now, a Mulan retelling sounds amazing! I really want to read Dark Matter and Replica too. I’ve heard great things about both. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book in the Delirium series, but the second and third books I thought really picked up the pace and I liked them more. I’ve enjoyed Lauren Oliver’s other books so hopefully Replica is good!

  5. I’m also looking forward to Flame in the Mist! I also really want to read The Name of the Wind… maybe I’ll get to it sometime this month. Apparently it’s really good, and Patrick Rothfuss has a very beautiful writing style.

    I’m also not a fan of Delirium, but I like Replica! Hope that one works for you.
