Happy Tuesday, everybody! This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie week, where bloggers choose any topic they want to talk about, whether it’s one that’s already been done and they missed ~or~ something totally new. I’m going to do an old topic: The Top 10 Books That Made Me Cry. As always, this meme is hosted by the fabulous folks over at The Broke and the Bookish.
• The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray: I bawled my eyes out when I finished this trilogy. My brother, who was three at the time, came up to me on the couch and asked me if the book hit me. (It did, buddy. Right in the feels.)
• The Raven King by Maggie Steifvater: I just finished this on Sunday night, then proceeded to spend a good ten minutes crying on my boyfriend’s shoulder while he laughed at me for getting so worked up about a book. Some people just don’t understand.
• Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare: Another book that punched me right in the heart. My Goodreads review from 2013 is the most emotional: “I’m sitting on my couch, alone. My old pink robe is curled up around me and the cup of tea I made earlier has gone cold. My vision is blurred, but I am not unhappy. On the contrary; I am happier than I have ever been. This book is every emotion I have ever felt. This book is life, and death, and everything in between. I will cherish this beautiful story wrapped up in these pages where it will rest forever in my heart. Thank you, Cassandra Clare. Thank you so much.”
• The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger: The ending was really got me. No spoilers for you guys, but it’s the saddest thing. The movie was equally depressing, and I also cried for nearly an hour after watching it with the forementioned boyfriend (he cried, too.)
• Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas: I was one of those people who read the first book and thought to myself, “Wow, is she really an assassin? I read this whole book, and not a single person died!” Guess what happened in book two.
• Not If I See You First by Eric Lindstrom: I really wasn’t expecting to cry when I read this book, but there was one moment in the book where Parker had a mental breakdown that made my eyes blur with emotion. I can’t think of the last time I wanted to reach through the pages of a book and just hold onto the MC, but she needed a hug so bad.
• Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews: Major character death is the worst. The second worst thing is when the main character is crying about it and you just can’t help but cry along with them in mourning solidarity.
• The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: I bet you all were waiting to see if this would be on my list. Seriously, who didn’t cry at this book? Posting about my river of tears on Facebook was how I first started talking to Boyfriend in the first place. Also, shoutout to the girl who obnoxiously sobbed her way through the movie. It wasn’t me, I swear.
• Me Before You by Jojo Moyes: Another obvious tearjerker, but essential to include. Her other books are just as memorable – to anyone who read this one and loved it, I would totally recommend reading her book One Plus One. Witty and very sweet.
• Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews: Does it count if I laughed so hard I cried? It wasn’t at the cover (but it was close.)
Honorable mentions: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Blood Promise by Richelle Mead, The Royal Ranger by John Flanagan, Changes by Jim Butcher, and Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling.
What books made you cry? Any of the ones on this list? Let me know in the comments!
God I forgot about The Sweet Far Thing when I picked my ten for this topic way back when. I remember reading it in high school and just being so shocked by that ending!
Other than that the only other one that made me cry was The Fault in Our Stars, god that was an emotional book, but I have Me Before You on my to-read list and I feel like that one is going to be the same!
Great picks for this week! 🙂

The Fault in Our Stars made me cry so hard! I haven’t read many of the other books on this list, though. But no know what to read next time I need a cathartic cry!

The Time Traveller’s Wife is definitely a ‘should come with tissues’ type of book.

Oh I cried way too much while reading TFIOS ahah. I just started The Raven Cycle series, but I am thrilled to hear that the last book in this series made you feel this way. It must be so, so good. I can’t wait to get to it 😀 (and yes. some people just don’t understand our love for books and why we cry while reading some of these ahah)

I hope you like the rest of the Raven Cycle! It absolutely blew me away. The tears mean it’s extra good ❤

Although I stopped reading Raven Cycle after a few chapters, I’ve heard from close friends that upon finished The Raven King, they had the biggest hangover and just sat there not knowing what to do with themselves LOL.
Cheers,

Oh my god The Raven King destroyed me. I was spoiled for The Fault in Our Stars so I didn’t really think it would affect me so I read it on a bus trip but boy was I wrong about that haha. It made me cry so much.

I think it’s really interesting that you included Crown of Midnight on your list. I don’t tend to think of books in the middle of a series as being tearjerkers, but it’s true. The book I’ve cried the most over was Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon. Oh my God, I was crying so hard I literally couldn’t see through my tears to keep reading because that wasn’t even the end of the book!

I can’t believe I forgot about Dragonfly in Amber! Claire’s journey back through the stones absolutely destroyed me. I’m following the TV show on Starz now, and it’s an emotional roller coaster I’m on for the long haul.

Admittedly I haven’t read any of these books, but I know what you mean. So many times I have to just put the book down for a moment and prepare myself before I go on, or else the pages would get all wet and crinkly.
My Top Ten Tues Freebie week is on the most frustrating characters.

The Order of the Phoenix crushed me. I never finished the series because of it.
