Teaser Tuesday #3 – The Assassin’s Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke

I’ve been sick as a dog for about 3 days in a row, and I’ve claimed the couch as my resting & recovery spot, complete with my big fluffy quilt, two heated rice pouches, and a nice pile of books to read. In lieu of a Top Ten Tuesday this week because I’m a little bit too tired to make one, I’m going to chat about a book on my #beatthebacklist that I’m slowly but surely making my way through. As always, Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme is hosted by MizB from Books and a Beat. Check them out for more awesome reviews!

Rules:

1. Grab your current read

2. Open to a random page

3. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

“I’ve seen him cast impossible curses before. And a cure is only one letter off from a curse.”

This lady is, by far, the most annoying and full of shit witch I’ve ever seen. The MC is sick of her and I’m getting sick of her, too. Like, really? “A cure is only one letter off from a curse?” What does that even mean? This twist is only one letter off from a twit, which is what you are! Ugh. Please let this be over soon. – 53% done

Other than that, TAC isn’t too bad. The writing style feels a little more juvenile than I’m used to, but the more I think about it, the more I believe it’s because Ananna occasionally drops into an accent that I don’t hear very often in literature. I’m going to assume it’s because the author is from Texas, and she decided to drop some of the twang into her protagonist. Also, the only person (people? It was unclear if the wounds delivered to other pirates were fatal or not) who’s been confirmed killed in this novel was killed by Ananna, which is odd because she’s not the assassin here. #WriteMoreDeathbyAssassinScenes2k17

  1. I read this book a while back, way before I started blogging and actually quite enjoyed it. I agree with you about the writing being more juvenile in places that I was used to but overall I thought it was a good book. I hope you enjoy the rest of this book Diana, and I hope you start feeling a little better soon as well, being sick is never fun is it? 🙂

    1. Haha, it really isn’t. And I am enjoying this more than my teaser might suggest; it’s a nice, light read that is definitely entertaining while I’m cooped up at home. I’m looking forward to finding out more about Ananna’s mysterious magical abilities!

  2. A cure is only one letter off from a curse? BUT THAT’S SO DEEP, DIANA. SO DEEP.

As a certified Texan, I now wonder if it’s my duty to read this book to confirm the dialogue’s possibly Texan flair.

What’s up with non-assassinly assassins in YA? Quite disappointing, really.

Sorry to hear you’re dying of the plague, though. Have you considered just . . . not? That seems like a better choice. (Get well soon!)
